If you are considering a winter weekend break, Faro in the Algarve is a good destination for those wanting a peaceful, relaxing few days. There is not a thriving nightlife in the winter months, but there are plenty of other activities and places of interest in and around the town of Faro.

There are many low cost winter flights to Faro Airport in the Algarve, so Faro is an attractive destination for a long weekend break. The region is popular in winter with golfers, bird-watchers, walkers, and anglers. Many pensioners also visit the region to escape the cold winter months in Northern Europe. The region also has lots of shopping complexes, and local markets which provide an amazing range of fresh local produce.

If you are considering a winter break in Faro, this article gives a few ideas of things to do in and around the Faro region.

Faro old Town – visitors to Faro could easily miss the old town with its narrow streets, cafes and bars. Look out for the storks that nest on the rooftops. The old town entrance is located close to the marina.

Faro Marina – a typical Portuguese marina surrounded by restaurants and cafes. Perfect for taking in some winter sun while having a coffee or beer in one of the cafes and bars which surround the waterfront.

Faro Beach – the road to Faro beach is located on the roundabout at Faro Airport. In winter it is very quiet, and is a god place to walk for miles along the sandy beach towards Quinta do Lago. Be careful swimming here though, the water gets deep very quickly and is not ideal for children.

Forum Algarve – (also known as the JUMBO shopping centre located a short bus ride from Faro town centre) – a large covered shopping complex with an attractive uncovered plaza and plenty of eating places. Portuguese prices for clothes are typically higher than in the UK.

Rio Formosa Nature Reserve (Parque Nacional do Ria Formosa) – ideal for nature lovers, especially birdwatchers. Boat trips are available.

Places to stay

The Pousada de Estoi Hotel -On the outskirts of Faro, the 19th century Palace of Estoi has now been into converted to a hotel. With its fantastic architecture and gardens, this is a great hotel for those seeking a quiet break.

Hotel Monaco is located in the Montenegro area, and is only 2km from Faro Airport and has outside pool.

Hotel Ibis is situated close to Faro Airport, and has outside pool. Also very close to Forum Algarve shopping centre.
